You know, I wasn’t an amputee when I was in school.
Back then, as I watched school movie classics like Clueless, Mean Girls, The Wood, Never Been Kissed, Love and Basketball, Heathers, Superbad, and Save the Last Dance, I couldn’t help but wonder: do amputees—or those with disabilities—even exist in “movie” schools? It was as if those hallowed halls were reserved for perfectly able-bodied teens navigating a world of exclusive cliques, endless laughter, and picture-perfect proms.
But here’s the kicker: life isn’t movie. And let’s face it, the real school experience is far from the glamorous and often exaggerated scenes portrayed on the big screen. Becoming an amputee opened my eyes to a world filled with both distinctive challenges and incredible opportunities. It marked the beginning of a journey where I had to forge a unique path for myself, and I’m excited to share my experiences and insights with you. As I continue to carve out this path, I invite you to join me on this empowering journey of discovery and growth. Together, we can navigate this uncharted territory!
So, my fellow amputees, let’s dive into some invaluable back-to-school advice. It’s time to turn those movie clichés on their heads and create our own unforgettable experiences, complete with lasting friendships and (mostly) unwavering confidence.
1. Embrace Your Uniqueness – Like a Movie Star:
In films, the most memorable characters are often the unique ones. Channel your inner movie star by wearing your limb difference with pride. It’s not a flaw; it’s your trademark, setting you apart in the most fabulous way possible. Remember: you are a cyborg. And how uniquely cool is that?
2. Be Your Own Advocate – A Lesson from the Heroes:
In many movies, the heroes stand up for what they believe in. Be your own hero by communicating your needs and preferences to classmates and teachers. Just like the protagonist takes charge of their destiny, you can shape your school environment to be more inclusive for you and those who come after you (in the sequel).
3. Educate Your Peers – Shatter Stereotypes Like a Rebel:
Rebels in movies challenge the status quo. Channel your inner rebel by educating your peers about limb differences. For instance, I started this blog to share my experiences and insights as an amputee, and it has helped me connect with others and, I hope, broken down stereotypes and fostered a more compassionateinternet community. Just like the misfits who change the world in the movies, you can change your school for the better.
4. Join Clubs and Activities – Discover Your Passion:
Movies often feature characters finding their true passion. Dive into extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports that interest you. Not only will you discover your passions, but you’ll also meet like-minded friends who appreciate you for who you are. It’s your chance to be the hero of your own story.
5. Smile and Say Hello – Be the Friendly Protagonist:
Protagonists in movies often start their journeys with a simple “hello.” Approach social situations with a friendly smile and initiate conversations. For example, I’ve found that starting conversations with people in elevators, sharing a light-hearted comment or observation, can often break the ice and make others feel more at ease around me as an amputee. Remember, even on the movie screen, everyone has their quirks and insecurities. While it’s true that you might encounter a few jerks along the way, the journey is well worth it for the chance to find a true friend or for people to reveal their true colors.
6. Plot Your Course Like a Director:
Just like a director meticulously crafting each scene, it’s time to become an expert of your school’s layout and accessible routes. While you’re at it, chat with the school’s disability services office to ensure they’re in sync with your needs. After all, in the world of movies, directors know every detail—down to the last cinematic pixel. Your school adventure definitely deserves the same level of attention.
7. Prosthetic Fit – Because Limbs Deserve Hollywood Comfort:
Don’t forget to pay a visit to your trusty prosthetist, because, you know, your prosthetic limb should fit as snugly as a Hollywood star in their custom-made costume. After all, you’re about to embark on months of action-packed scenes, and we wouldn’t want your limb performance to be anything less than Oscar-worthy!
Now Time to Script Your Own Extraordinary Story!
In the grand script of life, we might not have been cast in the roles we initially imagined, but that doesn’t mean our stories can’t be the most inspiring of all. As we navigate the world, we’re breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and rewriting the narrative for ourselves and others.
As you embark on this new chapter, remember that the most extraordinary tales are crafted by those who embrace their uniqueness, advocate for themselves, educate others, follow their passions, and spread kindness with a smile and a simple “hello.”
Let’s continue to be the heroes of our own stories and inspire those around us to do the same. Here’s to an unforgettable school year filled with friendships, confidence, and the unwavering belief that we are the stars of our own movie-worthy journeys!
I’d love to hear your stories about school—how it resembles or differs from the movies. Please share your experiences and insights in the comment section below! Your unique perspective can inspire and empower others on their own journeys!
