“Does your prosthesis ever make you tired?”

Yes, especially when life throws in a curveball or two…

I’ve been under the weather. I even missed celebrating a few important events. One of those events was the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA). Another was the annual Amputee Coalition Conference in Atlanta. I was really looking forward to both, along with a few other things. But life had other plans for me.

I’ve been dealing with the usual fatigue that comes with lugging around a 7+ pound prosthetic leg every day. It can be tiring, but I’m slowly getting used to that kind of tired. Then I came down with COVID, and I felt completely exhausted. This double dose of heavy-leg-and-energy-sucking-virus exhaustion meant missing out. On travel, events, people, even work. Normally, I’m not great at taking care of myself when I’m sick. But this time, I really tried. I made sure I drank lots of water. I rested. I let my body recover and get back on its feet. Well, foot.

I’m really sad that I didn’t go to the conference. I definitely wanted to connect with others in the amputee and limb difference community. But the last thing I wanted to do was risk infecting anyone. Not attending the conference was a tough call, but health had to come first. I’m already planning on attending next year’s conference. In the meantime, there are some virtual meetings I’ll attend and communities I plan to join. Maybe I’ll even make some friends that I can hang out with at next year’s event.
